The Rights of Passage Program (ROP) is a Transitional Housing program for youth 18 through 21. Located in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, this facility houses 20 youth, split between 10 apartments. This program can be 18 months in length. All ROP youth were first residents of our Crisis Center and maintained or found employment while there. After an application process, those youth selected from our Crisis Center graduate to the ROP program. It is the arena in which youth begin to develop the skills which will truly help them become, and remain, self-sufficient. Youth are offered extensive life skills training (money management, food preparation and storage, job vs. career, rent vs. mortgage, cleaning skills, etc.) and other skills which promote independence.
All youth enrolled in ROP are employed and able to pay “rent” (75% of their rental fee is returned to them upon positive discharge from the program). Rent is structured to increase each quarter in the program until the resident’s are able to pay rent in line with local rental prices. Many of the youth complete their educational goals while in this program due to the length of their stay. They complete their GED, or get their high school diploma or enroll in college, all while working a minimum of 30 hours per week. All youth living in ROP are expected to volunteer at least 12 hours per quarter. This is a program which emphasizes the importance of responsibility, giving back to the community, self awareness and personal growth.
